Who's Your Road Captain?

  • Anyone who rides in a group ride knows the importance of a designated Road Captain. He starts out by pre-planning our route to keep us from getting lost and he understands that the fastest way to arrive is not always the best option. After all, taking the long way on a bike is not always a bad thing.

A Road Captain is someone who’s job it is to make sure our journey is safe. They anticipate and help us to avoid unexpected danger along the way.

Since the Road Captain is riding in the lead, he can not only see hazardous situations in advance, but he can communicate them to those of us following. We put our trust in him. If one of us decides to do our own thing and not follow his lead or his alerts, we put ourselves, and those closest to us, in harms way.

I have found that I need a Road Captain even when I’m not on two wheels. Someone I trust and who has my journey pre-planned in a way that I avoid hazards, turn in the right direction and slow-down when I need to.

Like I said, we bikers don’t mind it if the ride takes longer than we planned; as long as the journey is the best it can possibly be.

“I’ll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.”  - Jeremiah 29:11 (The Message)
