The owners manual for my Harley tells me to only use premium high-octane fuel. If I fill it with a lower-grade fuel the bike will not run at it’s best and could suffer internal damage in the long run. The bike will still start and run, it just cannot perform in the way the manufacturer designed it to run. Bad fuel in, poor performance out. For years I filled my “life tank” with what I thought was high-octane fuel in the form of stuff and people. My idea of living my life to it’s fullest potential was dependent on what I owned, where I lived and who I rubbed shoulders with. As the saying goes, I bought things I didn’t need, with money I didn’t have, to impress people I didn’t like. I was still able to perform but I was far from running the way I was meant to. Come to find out, I was looking for happiness for a dead heart. I was trying to revive it by pumping in possessions and relying on people for personal fuel. I was filling my life with low-octane fuel. Any time we look for our identity, our validation or our happiness outside of Christ we will never operate as we were meant to. Turning to people and possessions to find this human need for fulfillment, at any level, will always leave us dissatisfied, discouraged and disappointed. Stuff is temporary. People are human. After trying everything, and I do mean everything, it was in Christ alone where I found all I needed including peace, contentment and a fulfillment that lasts. There's a reason it's called "Regular." You're not designed to be or run on "Regular." The high-octane fuel will always cost us more - but the benefits last eternally. “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:19-21 (New Living Translation)
