My name is Craig and I'm here to help promote a Poker Run for Cancer survivor Kathy Overly. Please check us out if you are local to the Atlanta area? The event is scheduled for June 5, 2010. You can find more details on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?v=app_2344061033&ref=profile&id=100000877264867#!/event.php?eid=349871521119&index=1
Hello my name is Kathy Overly and I am 46 years old. I work in the Internal Affairs Department at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
I lost my father in 2000 to cancer and it was the worst time in my life. I promised him before he passed that I would get checked every year and I have kept that promise. My birthday is in May so that is when I go. I have all my yearly stuff done around that time so I always remember to do them.
This past May I went to all of my usual appointments and planned to go to Panama City Beach over Labor Day weekend. All my test results came back normal and our plans were made for the beach.
Labor Day weekend was finally here and off I went. While putting on suntan lotion one day I noticed a very hard lump on my left breast. I remember thinking; I do not remember this being here and nothing was said about this when I had my mammogram a few months ago. At that point I wasn’t sure what to do because part of me felt that if it was something to be concerned about they would have caught it when I had my mammogram done. So when I got back home I waited a week and nothing had changed with the lump, so I called the doctor’s office and had them check it.
Dr. Haley said she didn’t remember feeling it when she checked me so she recommended having a specialist check it. I went one week later to Dr. Johnson and ended up having a biopsy done on it.
One week later, September 24, 2009, is a day I will never forget. It was the day we were flooded, my mother was here visiting from Ohio, and my daughter Melissa Driskell and husband Jeremy were away celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary, I was told that I had Breast Cancer. There is history of Cancer in my family, but no one else has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. My heart just sank and I thought at that time I was going to die. I found out that of course I was not going to die and was lucky that I had caught it in Stage One. I did find out it was a fast growing aggressive cancer.
I had to keep everyone quiet until my daughter got back because I did not want her trip ruined, nor did I want her to hear it from anyone else.
One month later I was at Northside Atlanta having a double mastectomy done with reconstruction. Then I was sent to an oncologist where I found out I would have to go through four chemo treatments, and then have one last surgery to finish the reconstruction. I am now half way done with the chemo. My last treatment will be February 16, 2010 and then we can plan for my last surgery.
The 3 Day Breast Cancer Walk is in October of 2010 and by then I will be all done with everything. I want to take that walk of victory with my daughter, Melissa, who has been there for me at every doctor’s appointment, every chemo treatment, and every step of the way.
The cost for one person to walk the 3 Day is $2,300.00 dollars. It will cost $4,600.00 dollars for both Melissa and I to walk. I am at a loss when it comes to ideas for how to raise that kind of money. I am asking for whatever help I can get.
I just really need to walk in that event, more than I have wanted anything in my life. I want to be an example for all county employees. I don’t just know someone who has been through it; I am that someone who has lived it. This is a way for me to reach out to others and show them there is a way to be positive and get through this experience.
I want to walk for myself plus every other person at the Sheriff’s Office that might be battling also like (Charlie Weber and Karyn Echman) or who might have a family member that has gone thru it or is going thru it.
I have put my story out there and shared every step of the way so if it can help one person then I am ok with it. If there is any way you can help, or if anyone has fund raising ideas, I would really appreciate it. I want to walk across that finish line a SURVIVOR! You can also see my story on The Susan G. Komen website, the address is: www.the3day.org, go to the “Donate to a participant” page and enter my name.
