  Roaring Thunder: Exploring the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota

  

  Every year, the sleepy town of Sturgis, South Dakota, comes alive and morphs into a roaring epicenter of excitement and entertainment as more than half a million motorcycle enthusiasts descend upon it to participate in the world-famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It may be hard to believe that it all goes back to 1938 with just ten bikers at a small event. The evolution of what The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally would become could not have been foreseen, as by now it has become the ultimate pilgrimage, a right of passage some might say, for those who truly want to know what it feels to be a true biker among true bikers. 

   

  It’s hard to conceptualize that Pappy Hoel, the founder of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, could have ever fathomed what The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally might look like today. The very first rally took place back on August 14th, 1938 and can best be described as a biker race and stunt competition. Over time, the rally began to attract more and more attention and would soon become one of the most significant motorcycle events in the world. Given its rapid growth and ever growing entertainment options,The Sturgis Rally has become a major part of bike culture.

   

  Fast forward to today and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is now a week-long extravaganza held during the first week of August. The quiet town of Sturgis completely transforms, almost overnight, into an exhilarating array of motorcycle races, jaw-dropping stunt shows, epic live music performances and trade shows with insane amounts of food and drinks. At the heart of the rally, the iconic Main Street becomes a bustling hub of vendors, shops, and motorcycle displays, creating a vibrant atmosphere where bikers can immerse themselves in all that is motorcycle life.

   

  With so many things going on, it can feel daunting knowing what to do and what to skip once you arrive at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Well, we’ve got you covered. Below are the top must see attractions that are not to be missed:

   

  1. For a taste of Sturgis’ origins, you have to check out the rally races. After all, this was what it was all about back in 1938. And now in 2023, the riding is bigger and the racing is bigger too and they are still the foundation of what the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally offers bikers today. From Moto-X to the PRO-AM hill climbs, there’s something for you and every type of rider in your camp.
  2. You probably won’t miss the Buffalo Chip Campground but we want to showcase it here, anyway. Located at the periphery, it is, ironically enough, the center of the bustle and flow of The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. If you’re camping already, then you won’t miss it but if you’re staying elsewhere, don’t skip out on the campgrounds. There’s so much there to keep you entertained from vendors and concerts and even more bike shows and roller derbies. Don’t forget the swimming pool!
  3. If you’re the nostalgic type, you’ll want to head over to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum as well as the Hall of Fame. There’s some pretty rich history when it comes to the world of motorcycling. You’ll come across some cool motorcycle memorabilia and learn about Vintage bikes and the people that have most created and impacted the diverse motorcycle community. For the true history buff though, we recommend the Wild West type of town called Deadwood. Named by its early settlers and lawless from its inception, Deadwood used to be an old gold rush town and never really ever changed. Stop in for drinking and gambling and some wild entertainment. 
  4. Mount Rushmore. Nuff said. Well, maybe we could say a little more. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is South Dakota’s most unique call to fame. It may not have been at the top of your list upon your arrival, but once you know it’s there, you gotta check it out! It truly is quite a magnificent sight.
  5. The Crazy Horse Memorial isn’t yet finished but that’s not a good reason not to stop by. The locale receives over a million visitors every year. While you’re there, be sure to visit The Crazy Horse Museum. You’ll get a chance to learn about the significance of where you are and how you can contribute to its future history.
